Swifts are one of the great sights of an Overton summer, arriving in the village each May after their journey from southern Africa. Although they spend much of their lives on the wing, their nesting period is crucial. A pair will often return to the same site year after year to raise their chicks together. And that's what they come to Overton for!
However, due to an increase in the repurposing or sealing of roof spaces and eaves, places to nest are becoming fewer. Nationally, the swift population has reduced by more than 50% in recent years.

The Village Tidy Group is launching a campaign, Just One Hour, and asking residents and businesses to pledge just one hour of their time to help keep Overton tidy. Whether that is one hour per month or even one hour per year, if enough residents sign up their time it will make a huge difference to our village and efforts to keep it as clean and tidy, and safe, as it can be.
Regulation 16 consultation process conducted by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) commenced on September 4 and ends at 5:00 pm on October 16, 2025. This is your opportunity to review and comment on the proposed plan.
