Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire, less than three miles from Overton.
This corner of Hampshire was Jane’s home for her first 25 years and where she wrote early versions of Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility and Northanger Abbey.

The Overton Jane Austen Trails take you by foot, or by cycle, along the lanes, footpaths and bridleways of Overton, Steventon and the surrounding countryside. Following these trails is like walking in the footsteps of Jane Austen and her friends and family.

There are currently four trails, displayed here in order of distance. All begin at the Jane Austen Trails information board (pictured below) in the centre of Overton.
Getting here
All of the Overton Jane Austen Trails begin at the information board outside Overton Community Centre and Library. This is at the crossroads in the centre of the village, right behind the bus stop.

Overton station is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line and is a 15-minute walk from Overton centre.

The Overton Jane Austen Trails project was devised and delivered by local volunteers under the wing of Overton Parish Council and with the support of Overton Community Association, Overton Business Association, local businesses, Overton Walking Group, St Mary’s Church, Overton clubs and societies and many local individuals.
The project was only made possible by funding and support from our community. In conjunction with Overton Parish Council, Overton Jane Austen Trails received £15,836 through the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Pride in Place Fund, which is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The project has benefited from the collaboration and support of Steventon village and St Nicholas Church, Whitchurch Walkers are Welcome, Whitchurch Conservation Group and the members of the Basingstoke Jane Austen 250 group.
